M.C. Escher's art piece Sky and Water 1 exemplifies the Gestalt Principle involving Figure and Ground. The image clearly evokes this illusion due to the value in contrast of positive and negative space. At first glance, one can clearly see the bird and fish on the top and bottom of the piece, but in the middle of the composition however we begin to see the illusion push and pull of the fish and bird because of the silhouettes form. This imagery is so because the figure and background interchange with one another through the shift of the ground from one form to another. What is so intreguing about Figure and Ground is that one can camouflage certain objects to where we actually perceive two different things- manipulating the eye if you will.
